Fundraising Ideas
There are lots of ways to raise money for SALT. Listed below are some of the proven methods groups around the region have used in the past. Good luck and see you at the camp!
- Student Organizational Relief Fund >
If your group is chartered with your University, check with the Student Activities Office to see whether funding is available for student orgs.
NOTE: There is usually a good bit of paperwork involved, so start this process as early as possible!
- Campus Penny Wars >
Girls: Challenge the guys in your group to a competition! Each group spends 1-2 weeks collecting as much spare change from students on campus. Set rules for winners and losers (i.e., winner keeps all the money, losers must endure something embarrasing at SALT, etc.)
NOTE: Check with your University for regulations concerning collecting money on campus if you plan on setting up tables/collection points on campus property.
- Plate Lunch Sale >
Although this fundraiser requires a good bit of up-front work and organization, up to $2000 has been made in one sale! Select a menu (Spaghetti & Meatballs and Red Beans & Rice have been successful in the past and are cost effective - usually served with spring salad and French bread), set a date for the lunch, print and sell tickets on campus to students and faculty (usually $5 each), offer to deliver lunches to faculty members on campus (they love this!), and arrange for cookers, kitchen workers, and deliverers/runners for the day of the sale. The night before, organize the deliveries and pick-ups so you know how many plates you need ready at any given time. All that's left to do is fix the food, hand out the plates, and rake in the dough!
(Variation: See if your home church would be able to sponsor a church-wide plate lunch sale after a Sunday morning service. If the church can donate the supplies and food, any money made would be profit!)
NOTE: Check with your University for regulations concerning selling food/tickets on campus.
- Church Bake Sale >
Talk with the pastor at your home church to see if it would be possible for the church to host a Bake Sale to help fund the trip. Students prepare and sell various baked goods and keep the profits.
(Variation: Church members donate the baked goods - this way any money is pure profit.)
- Panhandling >
Check with your local Police Department about the rules for collecting donations at stoplight intersections in your town. Permits are usually easy to obtain and if you take an energetic group of 10-15 students to a busy intersection on a Saturday afternoon, as much as $700+ has been collected!
- Personal Support >
Ask your parents for permission to send letters to family and friends explaining what the conference is, why you want to go, what you hope to see happen there, and asking for donations towards the cost.
NOTE: These donations will not be tax deductible so make sure donors are aware of that before they give.
